Fairhope Claims BayBears Classic For Second Straight Year

Southern League Mobile BayBears

Mobile, AL (February 24, 2010) -- The big inning was kind to the Fairhope Pirates during the entire 13th annual BayBears High School Classic. It also helped propel them to the title on Tuesday night.

Fairhope (5-0) scored four in the fourth inning and sixth in the fifth to beat St. Paul's (4-1) 15-5 and claim a second straight title.

Fairhope becomes the first back-to-back champion of the Classic since Daphne won three straight from 2000-2002. After Fairhope put up a run in the first, St. Paul's took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning as Dominick Francia scored on an error and Nathan Morris plated a run with an RBI-double.

Chase Domino tied the game at 2 for the Pirates in the second as his sacrifice fly plated Justin Hathcock, but the Saints jumped back in front in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by DJ Johnson.

Fairhope got to the Saints pitching staff in the third as starter Blake Mathews exited after a lead off walk and Domino blew the inning open three batters later with three-run home run to right off Dalton Rentz.

Fairhope increased the lead to 9-3 an inning later as Daryl Norris produced a sac fly and Kaleb Naseman added a two-run single to cap the inning.

St. Paul's made it 9-4 in the bottom of the frame as Francia drove home a run with a sac fly, but Fairhope hit the big inning again with a sixth-run inning in its next at-bat.

Norris highlighted the inning with a two-run triple, but Domino and Cody Etheridge also drove in runs in the frame. Peyton Fuller picked up the win for the Pirates going five innings, scattering eight hits.
Domino, the Chris Boyett Silver Slugger winner for the tournament, and Naseman each had three hits for Fairhope. Domino added five RBI. Norris drove in four for Fairhope, Etheridge drove in three and Wes Kent added an RBI. Johnson went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI for St. Paul's.
