Mobile,
AL (February 24, 2010) -- Chase Domino's three-run homer
in the top of the third inning ignited Fairhope to a 15-5
romp over St. Paul's for the title of the BayBears High
School Classic on a chilly Tuesday night at Hank Aaron
Stadium.
The game was called after five
innings due to the 10-run rule, assuring the Pirates of the
first back-to-back Classic titles since Daphne in 2001-2002.
Domino, the Chris Boyette Silver
Slugger Award winner, finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs for
Fairhope (5-0).
"Everybody's hitting so good,
it's almost like fire -- it starts and it keeps going and
going," he said. "We expected it to be a closer game, but we
just came out and played hard.
Winner Peyton Fuller gave up
three runs on nine hits in five innings.
Garret Pitts, who was 2-for-3,
was named the Jake Peavy MVP, while Daryl Norris, who
received the Larry Andrews Pitcher Award, had three RBIs.
Kaleb Naseman went 3-for-3 with two RBIs as the Pirates
collected 13 hits off four Saints pitchers.
"It's good to see us swinging
throughout the lineup," said Fairhope coach Stu Fuller, who
celebrated his 45th birthday Tuesday night. "Domino's homer
definitely gave us momentum, and Peyton was able to put up
zeroes after that."
St. Paul's led 3-2 after two
innings until Domino's homer in the third. Norris' two-run
triple, Cody Etheridge's two-run double and Wes Kent's
sacrifice fly sealed the win in the top of the fifth.
"Fairhope has a great ballclub
and it showed tonight," said Saints coach Shane Sullivan.
"They swung the bats pretty well, and if you miss a spot,
they'll make you pay for it."
D.J. Johnson was 3-for-3 with
two RBIs, including a solo homer, for St. Paul's (4-1),
which travels to Baton Rouge to play in Brewley High School
Classic on Thursday. Fairhope hosts Cullman and Hartselle in
a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
