Pirates Tame BCHS Tigers In Hank Aaron Classic

Fairhope, AL (February 18, 2010) -- Wes Kent and Peyton Fuller hit back-to-back two-run doubles in the bottom of a five-run second inning and Fairhope hung on for a 6-5 win over Baldwin County at Volanta Park on Tuesday night.

"They came at us and played well," Fairhope coach Stu Fuller said. "We made mistakes and their pitchers did a good job of keeping us off-balance. Thank goodness for a pair of two-run doubles."

The Pirates (2-0) take on Faith Academy at 6:30 tonight, while the Tigers (1-1) face Spanish Fort at 4 p.m.

Kent (1-0) got the win in relief, scattering two hits over two innings after starter Ashton Johnson gave up one hit and six walks with five strikeouts in three innings.

Closer Cody Etheridge went 1Ð innings and gave up one hit with two strikeouts for a save.

Jansen Boeschen (0-1) took the loss, yielding three hits and five runs in three innings.

At the plate, Kent was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Fuller doubled and had two RBIs.

Jordan Ebert went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Boeschen had a sac-fly and two RBIs for BCHS, which stranded 10 runners on the night.

"We had runners on base all night and we did not cash them in," Tiger coach Peter Bezeredi said.

"We had a chance in the first inning with the bases loaded and no outs and only got one run."

In Other Games ...

SPANISH FORT 8, FAITH ACADEMY 0: Rocky McCord scattered three hits while striking out five batters in four innings as Spanish Fort blanked Faith Academy.

Cole Jarman went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs, Patrick McGavin added a double and two RBIs and Troy Brown had two RBIs for the Toros.

Tyler Kiernan had a double, while Taylor Nichols (0-1) gave up six hits and five runs with five strikeouts in four innings for the Rams.

Spanish Fort (1-1) will play Baldwin County at 4 p.m. today, while Faith (0-2) takes on host Fairhope at 6:30 p.m.

SATSUMA 6, BRYANT 5: At Mims Park, Hayden Watson scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Cody Christian drew a bases-loaded walk. Shane Tooley earned the win, throwing the final two innings of no-hit relief. Bryant plays Cottage Hill today at 4 p.m. and Satsuma takes on Murphy at 6:30 p.m.

MURPHY 11, COTTAGE HILL 1: At Mims Park, Corey Tittle scattered four hits and struck out seven over six innings to lead the Panthers to their first win of the season. Christian Harwood went 2-for-4, with a homer and four RBIs and Jordan Spriggs added three RBIs for Murphy (1-1). Cody Stokes paced Cottage Hill (0-2) at the plate going 3-for-3 with two doubles.

MARY MONTGOMERY 11, THOMASVILLE 2: At Mary Montgomery, Dustin Evans allowed just two hits in five innings and went 3-for-4 with an RBI to led the Vikings. Dalton Grissett went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Chase Patterson had a two-run double and Clay McKeough added two hits and two RBIs for MGM (1-1). Jay Williams drove in the lone run for Thomasville (0-2). MGM returns to action today at 6:30 p.m. against UMS, while Thomasville faces Baker at 4.

UMS-WRIGHT 14, BAKER 5: Nick Laskay and Chase Williamson each had three hits and Lee English had four RBIs to lead the Bulldogs (2-0). Evan Grovenstein picked up the victory on the mound, going five innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. Ryan McGinty added two hits and three RBI for the Bulldogs. Alex Summer led the Baker (1-1) attack with three hits and two RBI and Phillip McDuffie also drove in a pair of runs.

MCGILL-TOOLEN 7, THEODORE 5: At Lipscomb Park, Mathew Zambo went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Toby Thomas added two hits and an RBI as McGill-Toolen (2-0) topped Theodore. Michael Enger picked up the win in relief. Issac Brannon and David Todd each collected two hits to lead the way for the Bobcats (0-2). McGill will face St. Paul's today at 6:30 p.m. and Theodore will face Davidson at 4 p.m.

ST. PAUL'S 10, DAVIDSON 0: At Lipscomb Park, Blake Mathews tossed a complete game, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts for the Saints. Tanner McGill led St. Paul's (2-0) at the plate with two hits and two runs batted in.

J.U. BLACKSHER 14, MONROE COUNTY 10: Cody Cumbie hit a two-run homer and Trey Brooks drove in three as J.U. Blacksher opened its season with a win on the road. Seth Baggett went 3 innings for the win. He struck out three. Logan Gorum pitched the final inning, striking out three. The Bulldogs play Excel at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Excel tournament.

EXCEL 10-15, WASHINGTON COUNTY 6-5: Dawson Turberville led Excel on the mound and at the plate to help the Panthers sweep a doubleheader from Washington County. In the opening win, Turberville had four hits and two RBIs, while also getting the win on the mound with three innings of one-hit ball. Matthew Rowell, Tyler Pharr and Josh Norris all had two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers. Kez Cooper led Washington County at the plate with two hits and two runs. In the second game, Turberville drove in three runs, Pharr drove in four and Rowell had three RBIs while earning the pitching win. Excel (2-0) hosts J.U. Blacksher as part of its invitational tournament at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
