AL (February 16, 2010) -- The Fairhope Pirates, Daphne
Trojans, Foley Lions and Baldwin County Tigers all got wins
on the first day of the Hank Aaron Classic baseball
tournament on Monday.
Fairhope 9, Spanish Fort 1
Host team Fairhope defeated
Spanish Fort 9-1 and gave head coach Stu Fuller his 500th
career victory Monday night at Volanta Park.
Senior pitcher Daryl Norris
struck out nine hitters and gave up one hit, two walks and
no earned runs in the win for Fairhope. He also added a solo
home run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Pirates scored four runs in
the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in
the sixth.
Kaleb Naseman and Chase Domino
had RBIs for Fairhope in the win.
Cole Jarman had Spanish Fort’s
only hit and RBI in the seventh inning.
Daphne 13, Robertsdale 1
Daphne defeated Robertsdale 13-1
at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Monday afternoon. Sophomore
right-hander Brandon Peterson picked up the win for Daphne,
striking out seven hitters in a five-inning, mercy-rule
shortened opener.
“I was really pleased with the
way Brandon pitched,” Daphne coach Joe Hutchins said. “He
set the tone for us early and the rest of the team fed off
of it.”
Daphne jumped out in front early
with four runs in the top of the first inning.
Kyle Reese had a two-RBI double,
while Russ Mosley and Peterson also drove in runs in the
first. Mosley added four more runs on a grand slam in the
top of the second.
“Russ sat back on the ball and
really hit it well,” Hutchins said.
Daphne added two more runs in
the third. Cameron Peterson scored on an errant Robertsdale
throw, and Reese drove in a run on ground out. The Trojans
added a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 11-0
when Jared Olson drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Blake Taylor added a two-RBI
double in the fifth to cap Daphne’s scoring. Robertsdale
scored after a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth.
Josh Baxter took the loss for Robertsdale.
“I thought our whole line up
played disciplined ball,” Hutchins said. “We took advantage
of Robertsdale’s pitcher’s mistakes and played well on
defense other than that one play.”
Foley 4, Gulf Shores 1
Foley defeated Gulf Shores 4-1
behind 13 strikeouts from right-hander Taylor Wheaton in the
night cap at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Monday.
Wheaton struck out six of the
first eight hitters he faced in the win for Foley.
“We started out well with Taylor
throwing strikes. He struck out the first three guys he
faced, which helped us set the tone early” Foley coach Kevin
Madden said. “Wheaton just pitched a great game.”
Foley scored all of its runs in
the bottom of the second. Eric Fontaine had a two-RBI double
and Matthew Salter had a two-RBI single to give the Lions a
4-0 lead.
“(Gulf Shores pitcher Colin)
Blankenship was pitching well,” Madden said. “We were just
able to get to him that one inning and that is all it took.”
Gulf Shores scored its only run
on a wild throw in the top of the fourth. Colin Blankenship
took the loss for the Dolphins.
Baldwin County 3, Faith
Academy 0
The Baldwin County Tigers
defeated Faith Academy in the afternoon game at Fairhope
High School on Monday in the Hank Aaron Classic.
